Re anon 1611; The EU is only superficially a democratic institution. It actually operates through lobby groups. The regs pouring out of Brussels are already drafted by commercial interests all over Europe e.g. we have to drive with daytime running lights because it was Sweden's turn to come up with some regs. In the UK you run the risk of piling into the back of an unlit car because people don't realise that the daytime running lights are on the front only. Regs are drafted to protect industry from competition. The EU has always been a racket for commercial self interest, actively encouraged by the Commission. There is no meaningful scrutiny from the useless EU Parliament and the press get to hear what's going on only when the regs suddenly operate here.
