It seems to me that the problem is not so much a lack of interest in exploring alternative views as a lack of tolerance of them.
When I grew up in the 60's and 70's there was a great deal of activity in universities that sought to explore alternative narratives to those proposed by the establishment. So, the pressure was from the student body for the dissenting voice to be heard. From what I have read, the current situation is the reverse, with the pressure coming from students with established viewpoints to prevent the dissenting voice challenging their world view. This is both intellectually and morally lazy.
It's good to hear that legislators want to protect free speech, but I worry that this may become a mere curating role if there is no corresponding appetite in the student population to explore the contrarian view. If there is no desire for debate then the freedom to disagree is meaningless.
