I think clients lack understanding in all honesty. In England & Wales our job is to advise them on the law, present options, and have the client choose the best course of action for themselves with the benefit of our advice. It's not our place to make decisions for the client and be liable for the clients business decisions as well as the law we advise on, that's crazy!

Turn on the TV however and lawyers are portrayed as taking complete control, wildly going off on their own and then achieving incredible "wins" for their client without any client participation whatsoever. That's obviously a total fantasy, and one which more and more of the public seem to think reflects reality.
