If the consumer wants transparency, then give them a lesson about costs of the law firm which are imposed by law. Then they will know why they have to pay so much (of course they won't care because they just want the job done at the lowest rate). Many high street firms are on the edge financially because they under charge for certain work like residential conveyancing. In fact every COFA in residential conveyancing firm should report how much time and how much fees were recorded so that they can show that in fact work is being done at a loss. It is a shame that human time is never shown on balance sheets and the like. It is just profit on paper but no reality.
Do we need to do the same for sophisticated commercial clients who do know what they are paying for?
