I don't know what it's like now, but there was a period in the 70s/80s when this was the response of 55+ year-old Head-teachers, as pupil behaviour and 'reform' made their jobs more burdensome, and of course further changes spread 'early-leaving' throughout the profession. I would never have encouraged my under-grads to go into school-teaching here, though that's not the case for the other European systems I have some knowledge of.
