Anonymous at 11.32: that is incorrect. Courts usually make s36 orders prohibiting unrepresented defendants from cross-examining the complainant in person, in domestic violence cases and other cases where there are vulnerable victims. The court then appoints an advocate for the purpose of cross-examination on behalf of the defendant. Courts also routinely grant special measures applications so that the complainant can give evidence either behind a screen or via a video link. Contrary to public perception - it is not open season for the defendant in court.
