"According to a YouGov survey of 2,000 adults, 82% of people do not agree lawyers should receive more in legal fees than victims receive in compensation, and 81% support fixed costs for lawyers."

I'm wondering if it should be part of the Lord Chancellor's job to point out the obvious shortcomings of an approach of letting opinion polls decide everything, rather than a sober assessment of what is sensible, appropriate and will achieve justice?

I dare say the same people in the YouGov survey would want to cut the salaries of MPs.

They might also want international companies to pay proper taxes and for the financial services industry to be held responsible for the financial carnage and dishonesty it has inflicted over the last decade or so. I don't see the current government queuing up to do any of these things though....
