Dear anon
Some subjects will be assessed by old style written answers in the way you want. (Obviously you cannot assess skills from multiple choice questions.)
But the experience around the world shows that your concerns about multiple choice questions are not justified. Indeed when I worked for the College of Law we introduced MCQs into some LPC exams, and they worked very well. They are harder to set than narrative questions, but of course far easier to mark.
Meanwhile I think you are being unfair to the SRA. They did listen to comments like yours. They then went away and checked, and verified that despite the natural scepticism of British solicitors, it has definitely been shown by the NY Bar etc that MCQs can work very well.
NB These reforms will also avoid students only learning a part of a subject (which they can do now at the academic stage, knowing that they know they will get a choice of questions).
