I agree 100% with anonymous of 16:34. I also used to teach law.

Under the current system where all the assessments are internally set and internally marked you can forget about external examiners / Law Society maintaining standards. For all sorts of reasons, (time, money, authority or rather the lack thereof), they simply can't.

I have had university lecturers tell me with a straight face that the truly spectacular increase in the number of people getting degrees, let alone get some truly phenomenal grades, and I include the Legal Practice Course because I see it as being just another taught masters degree, was down to lecturers today being much better than in the past.

What is needed, was always needed, and should never have been axed, were externally set, and externally and anonymously marked exams at some stage in the process of qualifying as a solicitor ... and, I'll be honest, I don't care how it happens provided it happens ... and soon.
