So here is my situation. I am German, though born in New Zealand. On the basis of my German nationality I was permitted to live in the UK and I have been in practice as a solicitor continuously since 1996 having been admitted in 1987. I have taken advantage of my EU rights to live in France since 2007, so I have no permanent residence rights in the UK. I have been a partner in 2 English law firms. I occasionally exercise my rights in England, though most of my practice is international. As things stand at the moment I will, from 2019, not be allowed to work in the UK, and thus to use my qualifications there. My qualifications will also no longer be recognised in the EU. There must be quite a few UK born lawyers facing the inverse position, where for some reason most of their career has been based in the EU. I'm not sure whether this is unjust - it just seems inevitable and I cannot quite see how it can be resolved. I don't think I can demand the right to live in a post-EU UK simply because my professional qualifications and skills are all UK based. Maybe there could at least be some continuation of mutual recognition of legal qualifications. I'll be interested to hear how things develop.
