Dear Mr President

I am certain that much of what the Law Society does goes unreported and unappreciated, and so the heavy lifting in terms of the many issues which need to be considered by a modern legal profession, falls beneath the radar of many hard working solicitors, working day in day out at the coal face of the U.K. legal system.

However the fact remains, there is a perception by many solicitors, that a once respected body has become cumbersome, unresponsive and remote.

I was hopeful when I first read the reports about a reform of internal governance, that such reform would herald a new era of more focussed, and therefore effective, management of our profession.

Imagine my disappointment therefore to read about additional layers of management, especially the reference to sub-boards.

I am fearful that we may be swapping one byzantine management structure for another!

The legal profession faces a sea of troubles, and in my view the pursuit of due process inherent in such proposed structures, must not become an objective in its own right.
