Part of the battle is management of the client's expectations and other significant issues are communication and an explanation of the process allied to that. Contact the client at least once a month, copy all correspondence in and out (having seen files from other firms it beats me why everyone doesn't do this - it is the client's case after all) and if relevant tell the client that nothing significant may happen for a month, two months, three months or however long because..........such a level of communication may take time but it saves time in the long run.
