From an uninformed p of v (am not a family lawyer or litigator), in these times of heightened awareness of people's sensitivities and delicate natures, it feels a bit odd for the accused to cross examine the alleged victim in an abuse case. Knowing a few embittered divorcees I can imagine a few of them would relish the chance to cross examine their exes in court, even if they could afford lawyers - and this approach, clouded by bitterness and anger, can't be good for either party. However, agree with many of the comments that if they want to ban this, they should automatically provide funding for a decent barrister to prep the case and carry out the cross examination.
