It is not only defendants accused of crimes who need solicitors, so do asylum seekers. I have just been interpreting at an immigration tribunal with an appellant whose solicitor got most of the facts wrong in previous interviews, which makes it look as if the appellant was lying. It didn't help that at the original Home Office interview he was made to struggle with English of which he knows very little.
