Those on this forum who complain of delays on the part of the court itself have missed the point. All too often I have witnessed lazy defendants with deep pockets who cannot be bothered to offer any reason for an extension. The probable reason is that they have a work load that they cannot handle but that of course won't go down well as part of a CPR 3.9 application.

I almost always grant an extension but on my terms which puts the defendants on the back foot because I am seen to be reasonable.

Time limits are there for a reasons so stick to them. If you can't then open a dialogue with your opposite number and offer a good reason. Don't think that you're above Rules because if you do then like the defendant in this case you will hopefully get your fingers burned.
