Anon @ 14:03 Apropos 'if you come to equity come with clean hands' so if you are to critique the human rights record of one state be sure that your criticism is fair and even (I seem to remember Iran criticising the USA over their use of the death penalty not so long ago).

Let's have a look at the membership of the OHCHR shall we?

Ohh yes there are the beacons of virtue Banglasdesh, Congo, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia, UAE and every good social democrat's favourity Venezuela.

I have no doubt that the focus on Human Rights is being used on both sides for cheap (or rather expensive) political point scoring and while this should escape scrutiny in the Guardian or the Mail it should not avoid comment here.

PS I am strongly in favour of the broad corpus of human rights law albeit that it should be interpreted via a common law rather than a roman law prism.
