Apart from North Kensington Law Centre I think I am the closest Legal Aid Lawyer to Grenfell Tower. Over the years we acted for about 20 residents in the Tower on a variety of matters including disrepair, domestic disputes and family matters. My database discloses that we did not act for any residents after April 2013 when LASPO came into force. One of the most insidious aspects of LASPO was the perception that Legal Aid was being abolished. Tenants were unaware of the fact that Legal Aid was still available for a number of matters. But Newspaper headlines do matter and in the lead up to LASPO there were many ill informed headlines saying that to all intents and purposes Legal Aid had been abolished. It is always a mistake to hypothesize - after all Lawyers deal with facts. But it would have been interesting to know what might have happened if the residents of Grenfell Tower had taken legal Advice under a Legal Aid scheme that was fair and open to all those eligible for advice.
