While I have no doubt the Irish Law Society is happy to take the money of those English and Welsh lawyers seeking Irish qualification, ultimately it may turn out to be money unwisely spent.

English and Welsh lawyers are allowed to go on the Irish roll because of the provisions of Art 1 of the EU Establishment Directive of 1998,  which allows lawyers of one EU Member State to qualify in another. Note the Directive applies only to EU nationals. If a hard Brexit occurs, British nationals with an Irish qualification may well find that the right to litigate before the CJEU and the EUIPO is denied to them, along with the benefit of EU Professional Privilege. Now where did I leave my Irish granny's birth certificate?
