When I was an undergraduate we studied English Legal History. Goodness knows why. I distinctly remember that Henry II introduced some possessory actions in the Kings Bench that attracted business from the Sheriffs and Manorial Courts. This apparently caused great annoyance to "The Barons" who made quite a good income from court fees and things called deodands; which are confiscatory rights that apply to assets that are the subject of litigation.
All completely useless knowledge of course.
Except that it's useful to know that operating justice for profit is not new. This was in the Middle Ages when we had that Hundred Years War on the Continent about who was in charge. Sounds familiar: perhaps we are entering into the New Middle Ages?
