I was at the same court yesterday as court duty when I witnessed a Romanian defendant in custody remain in the cells until after 4pm because the police failed to arrange an interpreter and the court could only get one on the telephone late in the afternoon. The line was very poor so goodness knows how the defendant understood anything. I left as the case was called on thankful he wasn't my client. The failure of getting an interpreter meant no BASS hostel assessment could be undertaken by Probation, which if successful would have seen bail agreed. Justice?
