I am a non-binary trans man working in a City law firm. The problems that Rachel describes were very real for me. The current GRC process did not work for me, so I did not apply.

Further, I don't understand why I had to produce two medical reports to explain my gender identity (I know it).

So many of my friends have not applied for the process because it IS medicalised, IS pervasive and IS stressful. I am sick of cis-gender people and binary trans people (who post anonymously) saying that this process is working, it did not for me and many of my friends. I just love hearing binary trans people saying that the process needs to be "a hurdle" and not made simple!! This just shows ignorance and self-congratulation.

Self-declaration is the way to go, it won't be abused because in countries where it has been implemented, this has not been the case. There are so many non-binary people that need this process to be improved.
