This is a sorry but familiar tale. The issues are complex.
Let's cut to the meat of this right now. Of course an AA will get paid less. Somehow. In a way it's like the Land Registry and HMRC getting rid of the more senior and experienced staff because never mind the skill and knowledge, it costs too much. The reality is the big beasts will keep their PA who can do everything from putting together an unregistered epitome of title to completing and filing an SDLT return. It will be the middle rank associates and assistants who will be expected to hunch over their screens staying an extra 2 hours while they form fill and do all the things a modern lawyer is expected to do from the one stop utility belt flat screen Robin. No thanks mate that's a mugs game.
Point is surely qualified staff should be concentrating on the advice, client care and drafting. You know that old fashioned legal work thing. And before you all scream 'hey there disgruntled associate hankering after the nod' I am actually one of the aforementioned big beasts of the legal savannah, hear my roar! I just don't think this sets a sensible business model and will further push down the quality of what we put out whilst stressing out the associates and assistants. Just watch, the regionals will be jumping on the train too. No doubt this won't get through the filters. Oh well...
