There is little point in arguing with cold-callers and trying to work out how they got your number. The best way to dissuade them is to waste their time by giving them a fictitious story that strings them along. For the "accident three years ago" lot, I tell them that yes I had an accident but thankfully nobody was hurt. I was on my way home from work and hit another vehicle. When they ask for more details, I tell them it was my spaceship and that I clipped a UFO in low earth orbit. If they haven't hung up yet I tell them that I refuse to pay for a new spaceship because I'd seen that movie where ET phoned home and got picked up by another alien ship. You'll be pleased to hear that I no longer receive cold calls about my accident.
