7 women are killed by their partner or former partner (and 2 men the other way round) in the UK. Far far too much of this kind of domestic violence is out there. He did not even manage to impale himself on the metal spike.
You don't kill your wife because you think you cannot afford to support her. First you ensure you are a feminist and both you and your wife earn as much money as each other - I earned 10x my husband. Secondly even if she doesn't earn much you don't kill her because you know there is a welfare state out there that will feed her if the worst comes to the worst.

So h e was going to kill another family member too - presumably an aged parent or their child!
