Yes, they assert that while prating that they are democrats and represent the will of the people. It is utter hypocrisy and self-interest.
MPs ought to be legally bound to follow the will of their constituents, so far as it can be best established. If it is for or against a proposal, they must vote accordingly. If the proposal is favoured by their constituents but to the MP is horrendous, s/he must either vote 'for' anyway, or resign forthwith, not defy their will either by voting against or refusing to vote altogether. We pay MPs; why would we pay them to defy us?
