I recall from my days at law school the excitement I felt, when told about cases involving the dubious health benefits of smoke balls, and the creation of a new concept of tortious liability, as result of a snail in a bottle of ginger beer, and how the giants of the legal world had such an impact on ordinary people’s lives.

How sad it is that the Law Society in 2017 seems to have lost its way, and instead of being a respected body, its standing has been so diminished, that the government feels that it can damage our legal system with impunity, since there is no longer a credible body defending the Rule of Law with any real passion.

Isaac Foot, Past President of the Law Society, designed the forerunner of legal aid, and it is shameful, that the Law Society seems more concerned with governance, than the medium term existentialist threat now facing an increasingly demoralised legal profession.
