Au contraire, businesses should be free to designate posts as business critical: the holder of such a post being obliged to work in accordance with the business needs of the organisation, ie full time on the premises.
There are people out there who DO prioritise work - married men with a wife and family to support and middle aged women with concerns about their financial situation in retirement are the two groups most likely to do so.
So too is anyone who has ever been unemployed.
I’ve said elsewhere that very often the agency temp who is obliged to work on the premises to be paid and whose reward is money is the mainstay of many public service departments as they are reliable in the way “flexible” employees, who are usually quite rigid in the hours they will work, are not.
Most service managers would rather keep the utterly reliable contractor and shed those with work life issues.
