Anon 14:11, you're absolutely right that there people who would act like that in all industries. I'm not saying it's specific to law, far from it.

What I am saying is that there are no curbs on people who do act in that unreasonable manner in our industry (I can't comment specifically on others but I'm sure some will be in the same boat as legal practitioners).

It's a double-edged sword; many clients will rightly be empowered, but many will see an opportunity to abuse the system, which takes away from it's intended purpose.

If we remove the ability for all clients to seek recourse, we eliminate the time wasters at the expense of giving well-meaning people a voice. Lowering the voting age to 16 and legalising cannabis are similar topical examples of this dilemma.

There will always be a negative side for someone, and it's about balancing it out between the clients and the lawyers.

I'd also like to point out that when I refer to 'time wasters', I certainly don't include people who genuinely believe that they have a justified grievance and make an ultimately unsuccessful complaint - that is part and parcel of providing good client care.
