I’m surprised to see the impact of stress mentioned as an aside here. Finding happiness and satisfaction at work isn’t just about earnings, though of course a fair wage is high on the list of priorities. There’s plenty of research to suggest that opportunity, self-determination, and flexibility is actually more important than high pay when it comes to job satisfaction. Stress, and lack of support and opportunity in traditional firms is a key theme in the conversations we have with lawyers looking to leave those firms to become consultants. We can also assure them that this doesn’t mean a trade off in earnings. A good wage isn’t simply compensation for stress and burnout. It should be fair recognition of great work, which is what we believe a fee share structure offers. The sooner the industry adopts this way of thinking the sooner new talent will come knocking.
