Actually sitting in court and seeing and hearing this being done is distressing. I do mean that. I am shocked to my core by this.

The bench in my case on Monday this week certainly didn't like it. The chairman commented in open court that if a defendant of a nationality other than British, thinks that his sentence is too heavy, he may well feel that his nationality has something to do with the level of sentence imposed. The same will apply to guilty verdicts.

One thing that distressed me even more, every single defendant appearing from custody who was British when asked their nationality said "White British." I found this even more shocking. They weren't asked what colour they were, just what their nationality was.....
