I find it genuinely terrifying that so many lawyers can’t see why this is troublesome.

The issue is in asking the question before the verdict when the sole reason for so doing is to allow the Home Office to make a head-start on potential deportation proceedings. Especially when the Home Office have explicitly said that they aim to increase the number of deportations.

If lawyers can’t see how easily that could prejudice the fair administration of justice then it’s no wonder that the government is having such an easy time undermining the whole system.
