I was called to the bar in Western Australia years ago. They have had a fused profession there for many years. I was free to practice as I chose. The main exception was that if you chose to practise as a barrister only you could sign up with The Barristers' Board undertaking not to work as a solicitor. In this way, other lawyers could refer specialist, and other cases, to barristers safe in the knowledge that the client would not be filched. The system worked very well.
