I also applaud Venters' sentiments. The distinction between barristers and solicitors was always against the public interest because of the added cost. As costs become heavier and heavier, the simple economy of having just one advocate instead of two (one in court, and one writing letters) is long overdue.

There is also the problem of the limited life experience of the bar nowadays. When most barristers had served in the armed forces they had some experience of social strata other than those they occupied. Now the ex-barrister judges seem to have little experience of ordinary people and their problems. In particular, lacking retail experience, they do not see those who do not sue when they could and should. The bench, and consequently the law, is poorer as a result.
