The idea of a defendant not instructing solicitors just to frustrate the proceedings seems rather a nose cutting venture, at least to my eyes. It would only delay the inevitable and poor conduct will always be poor conduct, whether represented or not.

The key is ensuring that some slack is given to LIPs who need it, without allowing this to devolve into an active disincentive to comply with the rules.
