I used to work at Medical Protection Society. It was one of the first things they looked at before investigating liability upon receipt of a new claim - is the member covered for this particular type of claim? Often then there would be a fight between MPS and the member about whether that indemnity cover applied in that case or not. Hence you would usually see delays of several months before the Solicitors could get on with investigating the claims brought by claimants.
