Every lawyer working for lay people will have experienced time and time again the problems which arise with clients who simply do not bother to update you as to their new address. I'm sure utility companies (much as I loathe them) and finance providers experience similar issues.

At what stage is it fair to say that adults should take some responsibility for their actions? There will of course be situations where people are entirely unaware of a CCJ and why it has come about, but in my experience those instances will be the minority. For example:

- If you move from a house in which you have paid the utility bills and do not leave a forwarding address or have your post re-directed, there is a reasonable chance you'll miss a final bill and be pursued.

- If you instruct a professional and then fail to update them when you change address prior to them completing their job and being remunerated in full, there's a good chance you'll be pursued for their fees.
