I didn't go through my own insurers as:

1. I didn't want the aggro of paying up front for a hire car (I chose not to pay an add on onto my policy extra for a courtesy car as that is limited to 14 days for a small car)
2. I didn't want to have the aggro of making arrangements for my car to get into the garage and then collect it when it was repaired.
3. I didn't want to go through the aggro of claiming the cost of the hire and excess back.

I gave them the opportunity of dealing with it or me putting in the hands of a CHO, they chose not to do so and have clearly not been able to settle a very small claim without litigation where the costs of the same will significantly outweigh any potential saving.

(Counsel alone will be c. 60% of the amount claimed, and add the issue fee and allowable costs this will be 100% of the amount claimed).

So as for driving down claims costs, maybe it is a question of 'surgeon first heal thyself'.
