I've read the comments below and do these not amount to an argument that market forces should be disapplied when it comes to training to be a solicitor? It's supply and demand. If it weren't for the fact that far more individuals are going down the legal education road than there are training contracts available and the profitability of most high street firms has been in decline for years, the latter might have a greater need for and be competing for trainees and that would then be likely to reflect in the remuneration paid to them. So don't just criticise the high street firms. Criticise successive governments who've done their best to open legal services to any tom, dick or harry with little, if any, expertise or experience and thus devalue high street solicitors. The profession simply is not what it was a generation ago. Thus those fortunate enough to get a training contract with a high street firm must learn to accept that their remuneration reflects the status and profitability of high street firms today. If they are unwilling to do so, they can always go to the city - or find work with a CMC!
