John Harvey, I suspect that the average 'general public' client is more interested in how cheaply he/she can buy legal services than the quality of the legal services provided. After all, that's why 'price comparison', rather than 'quality comparison', websites have proliferated. And if the client won't pay more than 'bargain basement' prices, it's hardly surprising that high street firms can't afford to pay trainees - if they can afford to take them - more than 'bargain basement' salaries. I don't like that. One can say it isn't fair. But maybe try persuading the clients to pay more for legal services. Maybe try persuading the government to stop opening the legal services market to the un and under qualified. Then the argument in favour of high street solicitors paying better salaries to their trainees might become more attactive.
