Meredydd Davies would be right if there was any suggestion that giving priority to certain faiths (and Irish people too, by the way) actually disadvantaged anyone else. Since there is no such evidence, the man on the top of the Clapham omnibus could reasonably conclude is that what we have here is a plain case of bloody-mindedness. On the other hand, even though this Coroner appears to have some Welsh form, what we have may be a rather heavy-handed way of hinting to, or shouting at, the Met (which is responsible for the pay and rations of London Coroner's officers) that they ought to tip in some more money to enable better cover for holiday periods, times of maternity leave or illness.
