Agree with Shirley Kelly:

Last year, domestic assault trial. Man of good character. CPS say he did not phone police and report first. Section 8 disclosure hearing - "no there are no 999 calls your worships the police have checked"

Half way through trial "victim" gives evidence - "oh yes, he was on the phone to police. Twice"

The truth is that any response to a defence case statement should be taken with a pinch of salt. You cannot trust the police and the CPS are too overloaded to scrutinize what they say. They don't care if a man of good character loses his job, kids as long as they see out every daft case to the end.
