If the SRA wants increased powers, it has to be prepared to submit to increased accountability and transparency. It currently holds its board meetings in private and is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act 2000. When it introduced its "Transparency Code" in March 2017, it abolished the right to demand an adjudication in respect of a refusal to disclose information. That right had existed for 15 years. It was withdrawn with no warning or consultation.

Quite how any of this is consistent with the regulatory objectives remains a mystery.
