"Brexit drills right down into everyday life." That is probably the most vivid and revealing comment by any of the above participants. What the speaker really means, of course, is that over the last 40 years "Europe" has managed to insinuate itself into almost every crevice of "everyday life" without the vast majority of people ever becoming aware of it, rather like the gradual advance of tooth decay. That is precisely how "ever-closer Union" was always intended to be effected (see e.g. Douglas Jay, After the Common Market: A Better Alternative for Britain (1968)); and the success of the strategy is the greatest achievement of EU organization and determination we have witnessed yet. Naturally, now that the time has come to face up to the problem, one has to "drill deep"; and for many people the experience of Brexit will be something not unlike a painful tooth extraction. Not pleasant - but necessary.
