It's not the question itself that's shocking, it's what the question implies - because someone who can go out about their day-to-day business without assistance isn't necessarily equipped to be able to effectively represent themselves in court. While housing may not be particularly technical to a lawyer, I would imagine the entire situation would be incredibly daunting to someone who does not do it for a living. Especially if the opponent is, for example, a housing association, who would most likely have lawyers presenting their case. I don't see Barbara from accounts nipping down to the court!

As for the court being sympathetic, I think the recent Reynard v Fox case would tend to cast doubt over that...
