It is interesting to note, that there was a report today about China banning its citizens from using public transport for activities which are, in the eyes of the state, deemed unacceptable, even though such activities might be wholly unconnected with using public transport. This is in addition to dozens of lawyers being imprisoned, for activities which we would consider, to be part of the normal everyday practice of protecting the interests of clients.

In “less happier lands” the Rule of Law barely exists, and it now seems to be coming under attack in the UK. Does this matter?
Well the Prime Minister in the context of the alleged despicable behaviour of Russia in Salisbury went to great lengths to say how important the Rule of Law was for civilised countries like the UK.

The Vice President of the Law Society recently spoke about members of the profession standing up and being counted over SRA reforms.

Might I suggest that the Law Society now needs to stand up and be counted on these “reforms”, which form part of a steady flow of measures coming out of government eroding the Rule of Law in this country, so as to expose the utter hypocrisy at the heart of the Lord Chancellor’s proposals.

So far as this Lord Chancellor is concerned, the honeymoon is over.
