I agree with anon 10.22 that this issue is the gift - to the Journal's workers by hand and brain - which keeps giving. I have lost count of the number of times it has been featured. Far from creating a Groundhog type ennui in the readers however, it alwaysprovokes a seething cauldron of comments - 91 currently.

Of course it is easy for those of us who don't depend on Whiplash for our livelihoods to make light of the matter.

But regardless of the £35 rebate issue, surely as a matter of public policy it is right to reduce the exaggerated profile which Whiplash has enjoyed for many years in the UK.

In 20 years time, there will be amazement that Whiplash has consumed so much time, energy and money as it does now. It will seem as anachronistic then as the pre-1967 paradigm on homosexuality or abortion appear from our perspective now.

Quite apart from the fact that driverless cars will eventually provide a technological solution anyway...
