I had to let loose a cynical chuckle.

People do not use solicitors because they have the assurance of being looked after if things go wrong. They use solicitors in exactly the same way as another other professional or tradesman - to do a job they cannot do themselves.

Except with solicitors nobody wants to pay for the service.

Personally I'd be happy with getting no PII whatsoever if I could say to clients "I am charging you £X because the contract between us limits your claim to the costs I am charging you." If you want insurance to cover me in case I cock up then I will charge you £Y."

But I cannot as I cannot exclude liability for cock ups.
