Re Mark Heywood 30.4.18 at 12.53: Mark, you are quite right. It has always been the same but 30 years ago, once you left the office that was pretty much that - no email then, no cell phones and the rest. Weekend working was then and is now a given. Vacations don't protect you either (and never have done in all that time: I recall taking a call in Albufeira in July 1991 from the office to discuss the validity of a memorandum of deposit of title deeds as collateral on a substantial property transaction when the temperature in the phone booth was 45C!). I can honestly say that I would have serious reservations about joining the solicitors profession today, notwithstanding the huge packages available: the call to Albufeira was the exception not the rule in the 1990's. The difference: disruption of personal time is now the norm and not the exception.
