I am astounded that he has only been suspended. Through the police station training in the PSRAS/PSQ you are taught that the client is entitled to have someone informed they have been arrested unless held incommunicado. Anyone must surely realise this means the suspect is not at liberty to use a mobile phone while in Custody.

I have never been asked if I can lend a client a phone whilst they are in custody. I have on many occasions been asked to pass messages on to people on the outside and my response is always the same: if you are happy for me to check the Custody sergeant is happy for me to pass the message on and make a note of it on the Custody record, I will pass it on. Otherwise it ain’t happening.

Perhaps in the future he might do well not to bother taking his phone with him or leave it with the Custody sergeant if he is unable to resist his clients!
