I sympathise with the barristers . Once upon a time solicitors did as much work as they could (subject to the LAA determining it unreasonable) in order to maximise their costs. Now that their costs are no longer dependent on the amount of work they do, solicitors have a positive incentive to do as little as possible and all that keeps them honest is the fear of being sacked by their clients. and its nit just the quantity of solicitor hours but the calibre of the fee earner allocated to the case. Most Crown Court cases, irrespective of gravity and complexity are run by paralegals as the work simply doesn't pay enough to enable firms to pay qualified fee earners to do it. As a consequence barristers make all the decisions and are worked harder by solicitors.
